This article claims that Firefox 5 has a 50% adoption rate so far. I’d call Firefox 5 and Mozilla’s decision not to support the aging Firefox 4 a bit of a success. When it came down to it I didn’t think it was that big a deal to drop Firefox 4 support. I do understand though it can be a pain to regression test a suite of applications to ensure support.

I wonder if this level or adoption will continue in the future. Maybe it will go in the opposite direction and adoption rates will increase more quickly in the future. I’m not sure there’s really a compelling reason to upgrade to Firefox 5. I can’t think of single of feature that merits an upgrade. So clearly people are not upgrading because of a new feature, but simply because the app told them to upgrade.

It appears Google is rolling out mobile web applications. Below is a picture I snapped from my phone of the new google reader app. It includes a new menu bar at the top. There’s a small menu bar and extended menu bar displaying a larger list of google apps.

This is an interesting change making google mobile apps easier to use and more accessible. It will be interesting to see what else google is rolling out as it makes sweeping changes to its apps (google+, gmail people widget). I like the change, hopefully it is here to stay. Google is constantly tweaking these applications.
